The Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) is the second largest stock exchange in Asia and the fifth largest in the world in terms of market capitalization (based on December 2012 statistics released). At least a tenth of companies, accounting for more than 25% of market capitalization, listed on the main board of Hong Kong Exchange (HKEx) are incorporated in mainland China, cementing Hong Kong's position as an important gateway to China. Given the fact that HKEx is sophisticated, mature and is known to observe the rule of law, investors are comfortable trading in Chinese stocks. Overseas investors contribute almost half of the total turnover in the Hong Kong securities market, a clear reflection of Hong Kong's attractiveness in drawing investors from around the world.
